Data Security | Michigan Electronic Recycling

Data Sanitization for Retired IT Equipment

Data-bearing equipment needs a defined processing plan before it leaves service. Michigan Electronic Recycling provides NIST SP 800-88 data sanitization and physical destruction for business IT retirement projects.

The appropriate method depends on the media, its condition, and your requirements. We agree on sanitization or destruction and the documentation you need before processing.

Wiping Options for Different Devices

Compatible computers can be processed through Aiken PXE-based wiping without removing the drive. We also operate an Active@ KillDisk server licensed for 45 simultaneous wipes and standalone wiping stations for media requiring separate processing.

Supported interfaces include SATA, IDE, SAS 6 Gb/s, SAS 12 Gb/s, and NVMe, including U.2. Tell us about unusual media, locked devices, or damaged equipment so we can assess the right approach.

Media-Appropriate Sanitization

We use clear or purge methods selected for the storage media and project requirements under NIST SP 800-88 guidance. A single overwrite approach is not suitable for every storage technology.

When equipment cannot be sanitized, physical destruction provides another processing route. We document the method used rather than treating a software name alone as proof of the result.

Healthcare & Other Sensitive Equipment

Identify devices that may contain patient, financial, employee, or customer information when defining your project. Medical equipment may contain embedded storage that requires removal and processing on a standalone wiping machine or physical destruction.

We can arrange a business associate agreement for healthcare engagements. Your required handling and reporting are agreed in advance; sanitization is one part of your organization’s broader information-management responsibilities.

Physical Destruction When Required

We shred hard drives, SSDs, NVMe drives, USB flash drives, and tapes. On-site hard drive shredding is available by arrangement, and we prefer drives to be removed from computers beforehand.

Tell us if your requirements call for physical destruction regardless of reuse potential. Whole-device destruction is separately scoped and priced by device type.

Serialized Documentation

Sanitization and physical destruction include certificates of data destruction with serialized documentation. We can tailor equipment inventories and location-level reports to the agreed project.

On-site serial recording is available by request for drives already removed from computers. Additional inventory work and consolidated reports may incur fees.

Collection & Device Handling

Commercial pickups can cover one facility or multiple locations. Drives already removed from computers are typically binned and transported in the cab with the company founder, who handles pickup.

Drives still installed in equipment are brought to our facility for compatible in-system wiping or removal and separate processing. Discuss any required handoff or inventory procedures before collection.

Plan Your Data Retirement Project

Send the device types, quantities, condition, pickup locations, preferred dates, and data-handling requirements. Include any required destruction methods, restrictions on reuse, and reporting format.

We will define the processing scope and quote the project. Call (248) 918-9814 or use the contact form below.
